Beyond Banks versus Markets: Financial Structure and Sustainable Debt in Europe
Key Insights
- We examine how the financial structure underlying the EU’s Savings and Investments Union is associated with sustainable corporate debt issuance.
- Using transaction-level data on bonds and syndicated loans over 2019–2023 and Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood estimation, we distinguish use-of-proceeds.

Overview
We examine how the financial structure underlying the EU’s Savings and Investments Union is associated with sustainable corporate debt issuance. Using transaction-level data on bonds and syndicated loans over 2019–2023 and Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood estimation, we distinguish use-of-proceeds from performance-linked debt. Corporate bond market development is significantly more strongly associated with use-of-proceeds than with performance-linked issuance.
